Obituary for Virginia Roach

Virginia Roach
VIRGINIA LAWTON STEELE ROACH Virginia died Solstice Evening with her family, pets, and dear friends around her. (Her beloved Cole Porter was also on hand.) She was 104. She is survived by her daughter Ginger Richardson; son-in-law Stephen Collins; grandchildren Cate and Will Collins; and nephew and niece Richard Steele and Lani Steele Mickle and their families.

Virginia grew up in California's Central Valley in its halcyon days of grape vineyards, orange groves and pecan orchards. She attended Mills College and graduated from Vassar. Returning to Modesto, she was a journalist for the McClatchy newspapers where she met her husband, Jim Roach, who was Sports Editor of the Modesto Bee. He went on to become a real estate developer who built the first shopping center in the San Joaquin Valley. Following his death, Virginia began a new career as a clinical social worker, retiring in her mid-70s. Soon after, she moved to Santa Fe to be near her family. Virginia was a world traveler; as a 20-year-old, her first trip across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway was sustained by samovar tea from kind strangers; her last voyage was to Merida, Mexico during which she celebrated her 100th birthday. Virginia loved language, literature, and writing; her many friends; bacon; her cats, Gray Davis and Simon; Yeats, Cheever, and Updike; a scotch Old Fashioned with Johnny Walker Red; the Stones; delivering a pithy bon mot; and, most of all, her adored grandchildren, both as youngsters and adults. With love and special thanks to Ellen Kleinman, Elsy-Mae Trujillo, Jeff Pine, Cristy Wickman, and Mary Feidt.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Virginia, "You're the Top," and we miss you like crazy. The Roach family has entrusted their loved one to:
